INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS | Uttarbasti
Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure with a persistent urge to urinate,
mild to moderate bladder pain, frequency and sometimes
pelvic pain.
CAUSES
The exact cause of interstitial cystitis is not known.
SYMPTOMS
Persistent urge to urinate
Frequency
Pain & discomfort while the bladder fills & relieves
after passing urine
Lower abdominal pain
Perineal pain (Pain between scrotum & anus in males
& between vagina & anus in females)
Dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse)

Cystoscopy & Bladder wall biopsy
Urine cytology
Potassium sensitivity test
MODERN UROLOGICAL
TREATMENT
There is no promising treatment for Interstitial cystitis. Different
treatments are used in different combinations.
Conservative
treatment:
Physiotherapy
Oral medications
– Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
– Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline or
imipramine relax your bladder and block pain.
– Antihistamines – may reduce urinary urgency and frequency
– Pentosan polysulfate sodium – may reconstruct the inner
skin of the bladder i.e. urothelium
Nerve stimulation
– Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
– Sacral nerve stimulation
Hydro-distention of Bladder
Intra-vesical cocktail therapy (Instillation of medications
into the bladder through a small tube)
Surgical Treatment:
Fulguration
Resection
Augmented cystoplasty (Ileo-cystoplasty, Caeco-cystoplasty
or Colo-cystoplasty)
